Morrissey's morbid mid life fascination with gun culture continues in this slick new rendition. ‘First of the gang to die' (on Attack Records) continues Morrissey's latest assault on the charts and rightfully has counterfeit protagonists running for cover.

Although Morrissey seems to have lost his humour on the interview circuit, he throws us a morsel singing ‘And you have never been in love/until you've seen the dawn rise/behind the home for the blind,' and ‘He stole from the rich and the poor/and the not-very-rich and the very poor/and he stole all hearts away.'

The only B-side ‘My life is a succession of people saying goodbye' is disappointing, and just nimbly saunters along almost blindfold filling the void before the disc ends.

After ‘Irish Blood English Heart' [read review] ‘First of the gang to die' is a pleasant harmless mid-tempo guitar pop ballad, which won't hit you in-between the eyes, but might just ricochet off you're right ear lobe.
