Rohan K kicked off the free admission evening at the Marquee with his gothic style musings on all things from pining after Californian girls to museum curios. His Tom Waits voice guided the audience through tales of interesting trinkets, the love between the butcher and his beef and just how much a loved one is missed. His style sounds serious yet his lyrics are droll and his delivery pure entertainment, almost theatrical.

The support performers to the piano were a violin and a double bass. There is something timelessly cool about these two instruments. The violin improvised over the heavy chords that Rohan bashed out whilst the double bass offered the quieter class that kept the order. The songs were introduced with comic and friendly banter that was as entertaining as the music. I really recommend you check this lot out, maybe even get dressed up a bit, drink some wine. I promise you’ll have fun.

Ukulele, gas masks, ribbons. These ingredients have never made up my Sunday evening before, not all at the same time anyway. Patti Plinko and her Boy silence you as they take to the stage. For me at first, there was a little bit of fear. According to their myspace site, their influences take in European cinema and the satirical underworld of Berlin cabaret. OK. But it is when the music kicks off that everything falls so perfectly into place I cannot imagine the three of them dressed any other way. Their performance is intensely seductive. Patti Plinko has an awesome voice, she moves comfortably between intimate whispers and full on song. Her sultry charm gives her a marvellous presence that the music matches. Just go and see them.
