Finland continues to deliver superb music in the most unexpected of genres. Pepe Deluxe has created a stunning piece of psychedelic tomfoolery, beautifully recorded and absolutely redolent of the freak music of the late 60s and early 70s. But this is no copy or even homage; it is a gorgeous edifice in its own right and deserves to be heard everywhere this summer.
Combining hip-hop beats with Simon Dee style 'Yeh-Yeh’s and a female chorus who could have graced the go-go clubs of London or LA, the lead vocal alternately sings and speaks to the listener, throwing in magical phrases from all over. Guitar parts suddenly appear as though the mad axeman had just walked onstage and the whole thing carries the listener on a rollercoaster until the farfisa organ plays you out into a crazed laugh. As a taster for his upcoming album 'Spare Time Machine’ this is great but it stands in its own right as a fabulous off-the-wall single.
