From the first moment I heard this song I fell in love with the 'Crashing Beauty From A Sweet Apparition’ that is Cherry Ghost. I’m almost afraid to hear anymore. Cherry Ghost is Simon Aldred and his elite squadron of musicians. 'Mathematics’ is the debut single released on Heavenly Recordings.

It begins with a besotting ethereal melody via violin and xylophone that could well introduce the Cocteau Twins. The vocals are epic like Scott Walker with a twist of Ian McCulloch. It’s a mix of indie, country and folk rock. Soaring strings, chiming glockenspiels, delicate backing vocals and solid backbeats are employed. Like Richard Hawley he brings new life into a good old-fashioned crooner, but updates it with occasional muffled electronic effects.

From the glamorous locale of Bolton comes the tale of 'peacocks on the chopping block.’ Influences such as Sparlehorse, Daniel Johnston, misfits, kids and old folk are cited. You can hear ceaseless hope in the wall of sound that ebbs and flows. You could waltz to this song, play it to your mum or your kid brother, what’s not to like?

The world simply needs more people who can sing and play like this. If this single is anything to go by this lot will go stellar - do believe the hype. If he asks you to meet him on the corner by the fire escape, for god’s sake accept!
