I came across SDP playing support to Derrin Nauendorf and I was struck initially by his confidence and the way that he moved easily from style to style. This album is certainly confident and his guitar playing is pure, fluent and varied. He has total control of his weapon and easily demonstrates why and how he has been sitting-in with and playing alongside many of the top US names in his time.
But there is a downside to this as well, in that there is no particular piece you can point to and say 'Stephen Dale Petit that is'. He can play like any of the Kings ' BB, Albert or Freddie ' and there are times you could be listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan or even Link Wray. On ’10 Year Reflections’ he makes a superb fist of Dave Gilmour but he desperately needs to find his own voice.
Musically this album is superb, it just lacks identity and when Mr Petit can deliver that as well he will have an 'Album of the Year’ contender because he could just be THAT good.
