The essence of punk is DIY so not only does this self-made offering from unsigned mongrels/underground heroes Lay Out The Traps assertively salute that very ethos, it also justifies the fact infusing your own work with rock solid influences is more honourable than trying to emulate them. There are myriad 'attempted' tribute bands on the scene but here is a five-piece "doing what they want because it’s punk" and refreshingly coming up with their own goods.
Precise echoes of Rancid and a little Ramones lace this loud 27-minute collective of organised chaos as furious strings, acute beats and ska rhythms meet with passionately-articulated lyrics which are simple but thoughtful. Whether you love or hate this album will be clear from the outset as opener 'Suicide' voices the typical intensity on offer. Most memorable further down the line are tracks 'Take What’s Mine', 'S.L.U.T.' and 'My Own Way', however the whole run through is a valid contribution to a genre not many bands of now can truly nail.
Until that's fully realised 'Beneath the Underdog' is a hidden gem in select London stores. It's well worth hunting down of course but discovering Lay Out The Traps’ live energy then heading for their merchandise stand is the ideal choice.
