This is yet another change in direction for Robbie, with a disco-infused cover of little-known soul classic 'Lovelight’, originally by Lewis Taylor. Parts of the arrangement borrow from Sly & the Family Stone’s 'It’s A Family Affair’ upping that 70s groove.

It’s not terrible, and is a vast improvement on that Godawful 'Rudebox’. I’m not keen on the computer effects over the bridge either side of the chorus, and Robbie in falsetto is like him having a crack at sounding like Prince.

It’s pretty amusing actually, and although a bit of a grower probably didn't warrant its own release, being more at home as an album filler.

You’ve got to wonder though what other tricks he will pull out of his sleeve on later singles if this chameleon Robbie continues. Is he going to just keep trying different strategies until he finally breaks America? We shall wait and see.
