I can’t quite take Juliette Lewis seriously with her 'Licks hat on. It’s perfectly good head shaking fodder, but since I first heard the band’s first single, I kept waiting for her to tire of what seemed like a phase during which she was playing the part of a 'rock chick'.
However, two albums in, Lewis is clearly still enjoying her game. It’s fine, the vocals are effected enough so that if she can’t actually sing, you would never know it, nor would you care. It’s nearing the point of novelty, I suppose. In much the same way that I don’t know of anyone that listened to Johnny Depp’s band because it was a good band, as opposed to because it was Johnny Depp.
But anyway, 'Sticky Honey’ is not quite as sexual a reference as you might first expect. The song tracks the complications of male/female relationships and how although rewardingly sweet, can get you all messed up at times.
Not bad. I can’t really get more excited than that, but if you like clichéd cock rock with a ballsy front woman, you will love it.
