There was an audible buzz in the 100 Club as The Veils took to the stage. Front man Finn Andrews, wearing a black trilby, wasted no time in leading the band into the title track of their second album 'Nux Vomica’. Now I have no idea what this fantastic title signifies but I can only assume that from the dark abrasive and heartfelt manner in which it’s sung it is something intrinsically important to life as we know it. 'A Birthday Present’ lightened the mood somewhat but nothing could overshadow the stumbling husky vibrato with which the lyrics were delivered. 'Jesus For The Jugular’ continued in similar vein giving the impression that Finn delves deep into the soul before putting pen to paper. 'Calliope!’ injected some cheeriness with the five-piece gelling well.
The Veils' music brings to mind raw powerful outback country giving it almost a spaghetti Western feel. Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave and Kurt Cobain are names that pop into the head when looking at relative comparisons. The new single 'Advice For Young Mothers To Be’ receives a welcome cheer and all but too soon the encore is over and The Veils slip away into the night leaving the crowd to ponder through the nights emotions. Refreshingly heavyweight.
