Fresh from the main stage, UB40’s James Brown and Matt Doyle offered a history lesson in deeply held political convictions fuelling their music for nearly five decades. Authentic and unafraid to speak out, the interview lived up to every expectation of sitting with icons of the British reggae scene.
If UB40 formed today rather than 1978, what would you be writing about?
James answered without hesitation, “It would be exactly the same. What's changed? The bad themes have got worse over time.” Matt, lead singer since the early 2020s, reflected “growing up listening to the band, I didn't know what half the songs meant. You think If it Happens Again is a love song and it turns out it's a political song which is something we do.”
Do you see yourselves remaining true to your roots?
“Consistently. We're a representation of the history of Birmingham and colonial history. Birmingham informs what we do.” James explained. “We've still got the same friends. It would be pretentious of us to be doing something different to what we're doing. We keep our feet on the ground through our friends and family, staying true to our roots”.
How has the writing changed over the years?
Matt spoke about a song he's written called Home which was on their last album. “It's just like a UB40 song from over 40 years ago. It's just as relevant today. Nothings changed. In a way, it's got worse.”

Who are some of the most inspirational people you've met?
“We've worked with our heroes, Gregory Isaacs, John Holt” said James. “It was amazing having John Holt singing our songs in the studio”. Matt reflected that it was like “meeting God, shaking hands with Stevie Wonder backstage.” Going to a disco with Prince was “nuts” concluded James.
Anything new – collaborative or unannounced – that you can tell me about?
“We're trying to announce it so we can't tell you!” joked James. “We've got a new album called Unstoppable coming out. We're very proud of it.”
Never ones to rest on their laurels, they've also got an American tour coming up.
