Meeting in the artist’s liaison backstage with Sonique, was a masterclass in authenticity and positivity. The singer, songwriter, DJ and producer spoke with infectious enthusiasm about purpose, creativity and staying true to yourself in the arts. Few artists have bridged the worlds of dance music, DJ culture and live performance as successfully as Sonique. Ahead of her set at Boogietown, the singer behind the iconic,

Looking back, was there a moment when you realised success wasn’t what you’d imagined?
“Money and success aren’t everything,” she reflected. “It’s about fulfilling yourself. Look at Rod Stewart – he’s had all the money and success, yet he’s still getting up on stage and performing. That tells me what really matters is what you’re doing every day. Your purpose is what you do day by day.”

Dance music has changed enormously over the years. How do you think it’s evolved?
“I think it’s starting to define itself,” she said. “The most important thing is to be yourself. Don’t think you’ve got to get your tits out or rely on your image. Rely on your music. Rely on your talent, because that’s what lasts.”

What’s the biggest lesson your career has taught you?
“Believe in your inner core – your natural human soul,” she said. “Don’t think, ‘I need a hit,’ or ‘I need to make music people will like me for.’ Go deep into your soul and believe in what’s there. It’s a really special part of you. I call it the diamond in the soul.”

What made ‘It Feels So Good’ connect with so many people?
“The song came from a real place,” Sonique explained. “I fancied a guy who was doing well in the music business, but I didn’t want him to think I liked him because of his success. That’s where the song came from. It was genuine, and we’re still friends today.”

Seeing audiences continue to embrace the track decades later remains deeply rewarding.

“When I see people responding to it, it takes me back to that little diamond in the soul. It’s those honest, simple emotions that really matter. You can’t manufacture that.”

Sonique believes our greatest strength, is formed under pressure. It’s that rare, authentic inner spark, she says, that has guided her career and continues to resonate with audiences today.
