Sitting down with Gloria Gaynor ahead, of her headline performance at Boogietown, was a reminder that true icons don’t just create timeless classics, but inspire generations. Warm, gracious and full of wisdom, the Queen of disco reflected on the enduring legacy ‘ I Will Survive’, the importance of self-worth and why after more than five decades in music, she’s still looking forward to her next challenge.
It’s lovely to meet with you Gloria and thank you for kindly taking the time to speak with Music-News today.
Has there ever been another artist’s song that helped carry you through difficult times?
“That’s a tough one,” Gaynor reflected. “Years ago, songs like I Am Woman probably got me started towards I Will Survive and that kind of thinking.”
Why do you think ‘I Will Survive’ continues to resonate with so many people around the world?
“It celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit,” she said. “I never imagined it would become what it has, but I think that’s why people continue to connect with it.”
What advice would you give to anyone struggling with confidence or self-belief?
“Know your own self-worth,” she said. “If you don’t know your own self-worth, no one will.”
She paused before offering one of the interview’s most powerful messages.
“Don’t look for people to validate you. Because if they can validate you, they can invalidate you.”
Instead, Gaynor believes the answer lies within.
“Take courage and believe in yourself, who you are and what God has placed in you.”
After such an extraordinary career, is there still something you’d love to accomplish?
“I’d like to do a tiny little bit of acting,” she smiled.
When asked what type of role she’d most like to play, Gaynor’s answer came, without hesitation.
“A tough woman,” she laughed.
It seems a fitting ambition for an artist whose career has become synonymous, with strength, resilience and empowerment.
While millions know her, as the voice behind I Will Survive, Gaynor’s desire to embrace a strong acting role shows her passion, for taking on fresh creative challenges, after more than five decades in the spotlight.
As she prepared to take to the Boogietown stage, Gaynor’s warmth, humour, grace and humility shone through, as brightly, as her unmistakable voice.
Her timeless music continues to inspire generations, but perhaps her greatest legacy is the reminder that true strength comes from knowing your own worth and never seeking validation from anyone else.
Thank you, Gloria, for taking the time to speak with Music-News.com. I wish you every success, with your future projects.
Smiling, Gloria said, “A pleasure, you’re so welcome and God bless you”.
