Pete Tong Ibiza Classics at Blenheim Palace Festival hit me straight in the memory bank, partly because I was 18 in Ibiza in the early 2000's, and partly because these tracks still live somewhere in the body. You hear the first few bars and your shoulders move before your brain catches up.

It also mattered as an event. This was the first show in the Palace's new summer series as Blenheim Palace Festival after the previous series ended, so there was real curiosity in the air. Would these be just as good? Would they change a winning formula? Why would they? The stunning backdrop, beautiful venue and top line up means this will work just as well.

Pete Tong had performed a similar show in the same venue back in 2023, which I'd missed, so I was happy when it was announced again for this year. Tong was on the mic all night guiding us through the evening - introducing singers and dropping one liners. At times, if you shut your eyes, it felt like hearing an Essential Mix voice you have known for years, except this time with lights, lasers, and a full orchestra in front of you. He leaned into it too, calling out the "Cotswold ravers" and joking they probably were not doing this at Blenheim in the 1800s - a nod to it's historic past.

The tour format is consistent and you can see why. The sequence of big tracks is built to bring back memories. "Right Here, Right Now" still opens people up straight away. "Pjanoo" and "Lola's Theme" bring that piano-house lift. "Children" lands softer, then the pace builds again toward "Insomnia", "Sandstorm", "Silence", and "You Got the Love". Sandstorm in particular has a incredible feel with the strings adding so much live, and the chilling vocals of Silence really hit the feels.

Tom Richards, conducting at the front, was key to that connection. He kept turning back toward the audience, baton in hand, bouncing to pull everyone with him. He wasn't just conducting the Essential Orchestra - he had the crowd working with him as well. A great skill to have and nice to see the energy being transferred around.

Mid set, Tong told us he nearly cut Zombie Nation, then changed his mind after a backstage word. Good decision. During it, the tuba player was brought right to the front and stole the moment. A massive brass instrument leading a rave anthem should not work as well as it does, but it absolutely did!

There was a football side note too, with an England World Cup game hanging over the evening. Tong came out in an England shirt and joked, "The duke says we can have an after party if you do as I say", which got a huge cheer.

By the final run of "Cafe Del Mar", "Gypsy Woman" and "You Got the Love", the audience were well and truly enjoying themselves and it wasn't hard to see why. These are classic songs that have stood the test of time, and never fail to bring a smile.

When the evening ended, you had that fuzzy feel of a good night out had with friends that you just don't want to finish.

Support came from Sarah Story and Danny Rampling on DJ sets before Tong. They did the job well, kept the floor warm and handed over at the right energy level.

Further events this week include Alanis Morissette, Teddy Swims, Katy Perry & Michael Buble.
