One of the biggest stars in pop music, Olivia Rodrigo, has now released her latest single, ‘Drop Dead’.
The song kicks off with this slow, dreamlike sound followed by Olivia’s soft vocals and definitely sounds more pop than her pop-punk-style music.
Fan will be aware that when she played Glastonbury last year, she performed with one of her biggest inspirations, The Cure, and she referenced them in the first verse: “You know all the words to 'Just Like Heaven' / And I know why he wrote them / Now that you're standing right here."
As usual, Rodrigo’s lyrics are always relatable for every girl in their 20s, especially in this new track "Oh, one night I was bored in bed / And stalked you on the internet", and as the chorus continues, you feel this rising tension.
However, this song offers a tremendous amount of layers, and as we reach verse two, Olivia’s vocals are more versatile in a sort of spoken-word type of style: “And I feel like I might throw up / Left hook, right punch to the gut / You're so, so pretty, boy / I'm paranoid I made you up." The rhyming scheme and run-on sentences are quite different to her usual work, and it’s incredibly impressive.
Many people online have compared it to Wolf Alice’s ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses', and the similarities are there.
Announcing the single, Rodrigo addressed her 39.5 million Instagram followers, saying: “Drop dead is out now. I love this song so much!
“It’s the first chapter in the story of You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, and it makes me want to skip around and roll the windows down and make out!
“I was lucky enough to film the music video at the Palace of Versailles a few months ago with the wonderful director Petra Collins, and I’m so stoked with how it turned out.
"I hope you guys love it as much as I do."
‘You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love’ will be out on the 12th of June 2026.
