Stockport’s The Rolling People, an extremely exciting upcoming indie band, played The Key Club in Leeds, and they are definitely ones to watch.
As venues go in Leeds, this is one of my favourites, and walking in, this twenty-something crowd were all packed in, eagerly awaiting the headline set.
They graced the stage, invoking cheers and clapping from the crowd, and launched straight into ‘State Of Things’, the first track off their new EP, which came out on Monday, 6th of April. They may be rising stars, but the frontman in particular in this indie rock band has the charisma and stage presence of seasoned pros.
One thing that sets this band apart from other emerging artists is the singer. His vocals are absolutely terrific, and sometimes with indie bands, they’re not as strong as the instrumental, but they complement every single riff.
A big highlight of the show was the breakdown instrumental in ‘Disguise’, so sharp but heavy, with the riffs and drums complimenting each other perfectly. It was simply infectious to the ear, and you felt it coursing through your veins.
One special heart-warming moment was a song titled ‘Another Day', which the frontman introduced as a song about alcoholism. The lyrics were packed with emotion and power, reflected in the “Because I remember hoping he'd be fine / Then the empty glass stayed dry", which really spoke to everyone’s hearts.
We were also treated to a change of tone, including two acoustic sets of ‘A Crack In The Glass’ and ‘Better Man’.
As well as their recently released EP titled ‘Outlier’, the band also played some of their earlier tracks such as ‘I’ll Be There', which the crowd clearly knew so well as they belted out every line along with the band.
The Rolling People finished their Leeds set on a similar instrumental to bands like Wunderhorse, and it was a great way to finish off this evening.
Leaving the gig, The Rolling People absolutely exceeded my expectations, for sure.
