One of the most promising and exciting bands in rock across the globe right now, The Beaches released their latest single, ‘I Ran (So Far Away)’, last week, and it is clear to see the band are growing ever more confident with each release.
The track opens with dreamy, lifting, drifting guitar chords that sound as though they have been plucked straight from one of The Cure’s tracks. Paired with Jordan’s light, whimsical vocals, it makes for a hit from the off.
Narrative-wise, this song follows on naturally from their latest album, ‘No Hard Feelings’, released last summer, which focused primarily on queer love and heartbreak.
The theme in this latest release is clear from the opening lyrics: “I walked along the avenue / I never thought I'd meet a girl like you… With auburn hair and tawny eyes / The kind of eyes that hypnotize me through.” These lines emphasise a relatable, real-life love story, capturing the feeling of being transfixed by someone from the very first glance.
Moving into the chorus, “And I ran, I ran so far away” hammers home the fear and nerves that come with meeting someone who takes your breath away, and Jordan’s passionate vocals affirm this further.
Instrumentally, the band seem to slightly experiment and show a new side to their ever-growing versatility. The sound, especially during the building drum sections paired with a twanging guitar riff, is delicious and carefully crafted. It is refreshing to hear a song that highlights just how strong and important the drums are to their music.
Overall, this track is beautiful and one of their best yet. A band who have grown so much over the past few years and show no signs of slowing down.
The band are set to embark on a European tour next month, starting in Tilburg on February 3, hitting the UK in mid-February, before finishing in Hamburg on February 22.
