The world's most notable musician and THE pop girl of our generation for generations, Taylor Swift has now released her new album, 'The Life of a Showgirl'.
A woman who has delved deep into an array of genres and sounds, it’s hard to believe she’s got anything left to create, but Taylor is back with her twelfth studio album and its undeniably one of her strongest yet.
The album’s opener ‘The Fate of Ophelia’ is the epitome of Taylor’s music; it’s enticing, clean, pristine and dramatic. As soon as you hear this song, the body relaxes knowing the Queen of Music has delivered again.
My favourite on this album is track two, titled ‘Elizabeth Taylor’ after the late, great celebrated actress. The song is evidently about her relationship with her now fiancé Travis Kelce.
The lyrics demonstrate quite how much this love means to Taylor, reflected in the chorus “And if your letters ever said, "Goodbye" / I'd cry my eyes violet, Elizabeth Taylor / Tell me for real, do you think it's forever?”. As she sings its clear, she will stand the test of time as an artist because her vocals are so consistently perfect. Mentioning the chorus, the beat drop prior to it is delicious and its shows how well this careful layering is crafted.
It’s also key to mention the song is titled after Elizabeth Taylor, who was known for a turbulent personal life and often the talk of Hollywood, much like Taylor who is viewed similarly in these social circles and this is reflected in the lyrics, “Be my NY wh?n Hollywood hates me / You're only as hot as your last hit, baby”.
‘Opalite’ offers the use of canon that builds as she sings “Love”, this offers something unique and stands out because I haven’t noticed Taylor using this technique previously. ‘Father Figure’ suggest inspiration from the George Michael song, specifically around the chorus, but the song suggest the themes of reminiscing on her early career and guiding her younger self.
Other notable tracks include ‘Actually Romantic’ which is rumoured to be a diss-track at Charli XCX and ‘CANCELLED’ has been suggested to centre around Blake Lively and their friendship, but as of yet this hasn’t been confirmed.
Overall, this album offers new elements of Taylor we haven’t seen and there’s not one flop track which is so rare, but there’s no one who delivers like Taylor Swift.
