Florence and The Machine have released their whimsical new single ‘Everybody Scream’ ahead of their new album of the same title set to release on Halloween (October 31) this year.

‘Everybody Scream’ places frontwoman, Florence Welch’s powerfully spellbinding vocals at the forefront whilst amalgamating instrumentation which feels mightily mystical and triumphant.

Throughout the track vocal harmonies are prominent, not only through lyrics but through screams that gradually diminish, further showcasing Welch’s vocal. This energises the track’s folkloric spirit, making listeners visualise the communal chanting as a transcendent and somewhat holy experience. This is highlighted in the rockier edge of the song whilst the lyrics “Everybody Dance / Everybody Sing / Everybody Move / Everybody Scream” are paraded to listeners.

Blurring the boundaries between the real and the fantastical, ‘Everybody Scream’ offers an ethereal spookiness, intriguingly topical for the lead single of an album set to release on Halloween. Halloween, and the Celtic holiday of Samhain, focuses on the dead and the supernatural, with the latter marking the end of harvest and the beginning of a ‘darker’ season. The indie-rock group intentionally emphasise this imagery within their new single; there is an emotional, organised chaos which ignites its lyrics; “the witchcraft, the medicine, the spells and the injections / The harvest, the needle, protect me from evil / The magic and the misery, madness and the mystery / Oh what has it done to me? Everybody scream.”

‘Everybody Scream’ uses a fascinating medieval charm to anticipate the release of Florence and The Machine’s upcoming album; sharpening the group’s artistic flare as they enter a new sonic era.
