YOUR favourite artist’s favourite artist is back with a new single, titled ‘The Subway’. The track is poetic, emotional, raw and real – maybe even her best song yet!

‘The Subway’ opens with this flowing, drifting beat which is inherently endearing, drawing listeners in.

Chappell’s vocals are pristine, like always, as she sings the first set of carefully crafted lyrics “I saw your green hair / Beauty mark next to your mouth / There on the subway / I nearly had a breakdown.” The lyrics are intriguing, a description of someone written through eyes of adoration, but with this relatable naivety that many can resonate with: passion so strong you could literally breakdown.

The post chorus hits so hard when Roan sings sweetly “But I'm still counting down all of the days / 'Til you're just another girl on the subway” – her tone expresses the sadness and disappointment, it’s impossible not to feel empathy within a Chappell Roan song because her delivery hits the mark each time.

As we reach the outro, after the emotional plunge Roan has put us through already in this track, it’s impossible not to belt out “She's got, she's got a way / She's got a way, she's got a way /And she got, she got away / She got away, she got away”. We’ve all been in Chappell’s shoes, wishing away whoever has been our “girl on the subway”.

It’s key to point out, the double entendre used in the outro’s lyrics, are absolutely pristine and it is a masterclass in song writing.

The single has left fans begging for a new album, but Chappell told Vogue it “doesn’t exist yet”, and could “take at least five years to write”.

From my perspective, if there’s any artist on the planet worth waiting for, it is Chappell Roan.
