Andrew Pipe is well known, both as a supporting musician and, with brother Jamie, as a part of The Mentulls.
This track, his first solo project, is a rather fine piece of modern Prog, combining his excellent guitar work alongside Steve Amadeo’s fluid bass and Damon Claridge’s powerful drumming.
The track is one of a number he has produced with Amadeo and Claridge after working with them on a number of other projects during and after lockdown.
To my ear Pipe’s riffs are a joy, acting as a springboard to a vaulting lead line that circles like a Condor over the mountains. There is an acoustic section that only serves to add focus as it leads into a final section that is as stirring as it is emotive. The drums are pounding and expressive while Amadeo’s bass is nagging and insistent throughout, holding the whole piece together.
There are those instrumental singles that can be listened to time and again, and those that are as forgetful as annoying. Thankfully, this is one that I was happy to cue up a number of times, savouring and becoming entranced by each section and part.
Very, very good listening.
