It was with an air of anticipation that I entered the familiar surroundings of the majestic Bush Hall. Having heard the latest album ‘Afro Strut' and its predecessor ‘Waltz of a Ghetto Fly' I was inquisitive to see how the recordings would translate live.
Soon Fiddler and his three band members (drums, bass, guitar) took to the stage. From the opening introduction and wearing loose fitting jeans, white vest and white cap, Fiddler commanded the stage with a calm confidence that grew throughout the 50 minute set. Soul, funk, R&B, and jazz fused as the expert musicianship shone through.
Hailing from the infamous 7 Mile in Detroit, Joseph ‘Amp' Fiddler was the lead keyboardist for George Clinton and his extensive list of credits also include Jamiroquai, Prince and the Brand New Heavies, the later of which were amongst the audience tonight. Contrary to other ghetto artists of Detroit, Amp's refreshing take on life offers us romance instead of hardcore domestic violence. The jazzed-up pianos and understated guitar struck melodies that tingled the backbone. Fiddler's voice was smoothly exceptional as was the technical wizardry of all around.
Feel good music for the musically leaning romantically inclined, I wish him every success.
