As a twenty something with minimal disposable income, I’m not the usual demographic of the Cambridge club. Its lenient attitude to camping chairs, child friendly atmosphere and luxurious sponsors have made this small festival a favourite for disco loving middle class families. But with an all star lineup, including the likes of Chaka Khan and Jessie Ware, it’s very hard not to love.
Spread out over three days, soul lovers were spoiled, with a jam packed itinerary of funk, pop and disco all the way through. The one sister left in Sister Sledge truly brought out the sunshine for their standout performance on Saturday. Complete with bejewelled outfits and a dance off to find the ‘greatest dancer’ in the crowd it felt like an aptly family affair.
Chaka Khan was also a predictable highlight. The ten time grammy winning legend closed the festival with signature swagger, her vocal chords sounding as strong as ever during classics like ‘I feel for you’ and ‘Aint nobody’. If it wasn’t for an extensively long costume change, which included a rather strange cameo from her aspiring artist nephew, it would have been a near perfect performance.
In the rare moments you weren’t getting your groove on, there were plenty of other things to keep you inspired. The discovery den had some great comedy acts over the weekend, including Zoe Lyons, who played to the crowd with hilarious takes on the menopause and the joys of a colonoscopy. There was also a free cinema showing nostalgic crowd pleasers all weekend and a whole play area dedicated to keeping the kids entertained.
Whilst this is certainly not the most eclectic or expansive festival, it is a great option for those who don’t want to sacrifice big acts for a more relaxed, family focussed experience. With a palpably friendly feel and plenty of glitter, the Cambridge club is a sure way to start your summer with a sparkle.
