Thom Yorke has composed an original score for Daniele Luchetti’s film ‘Confidenza’, an adaptation of the Italian drama based on a novel by prolific author Domenico Starnone.

Yorke brings to the table trusted collaborators and established working relationships in form of the London Contemporary Orchestra alongside a jazz ensemble featuring Robert Stillman (American multi-instrumentalist) and Tom Skinner (drummer) from The Smile. Yorke has also previously worked with Sam Petts-Davies, co-producer on their critically acclaimed first feature film soundtrack for Suspiria (2018) and producer of The Smile’s album ‘Wall of Eyes’ (2023).

Confidenza starts with ‘The Big City’ as we taken to a beautifully surreal and delicate place from the moment the album plays. Synths and strings evoke an ominous strangeness accompanied with the use of distorted vocal effects to add subtle curiosities to the isolating and sombre instrumental tones. Opening a music box on ‘Knife Edge’, Yorke starts to thread the album together by resonantly delivering the central themes of love, loss and life. Innocence and intrigue that follows with ‘Letting Down Gently’ and ‘Secret Clarinet’. Up until ‘In The Trees’, which feels oppressive and suspenseful.

‘Prize Giving’ slithers in, rattle-snaking it’s way through swinging horns and harmonies. On ‘Four Ways In Time’, Yorke converses using vocal layering and violins. You hear emotions becoming more erratic and it warps into ‘Confidenza’ ending with unsettling and creepy strings. Orchestral meets experimental, ‘Nosebleed Nuptials’ could have been on Amnesiac, even as it descends into an almost incoherent end. Broody and bassy, ‘Bunch of Flowers’ is off-kilter, ‘A Silent Scream’ holds together until ‘On The Ledge’ erupts into collective chaos. As an immersive listen, you feel like you’re having an out of body experience.

As an understated composer, Thom Yorke is creatively honest and unrestrained. He has created a stirringly atmospheric album that exhibits his unique ability to tune into frequencies not many others can. Confidenza, in terms of its subtle yet complex artistry, is a triumph.

Confidenza is released digitally on 26th April 2024. Vinyl and CD issued on 12th July 2024.
