Anytime a new album from Black Country Communion lands I get a sense of incoming joy. One of the few supergroups to last the course – Glenn Hughes on bass & vocals, Joe Bonamassa on guitar & vocals, Jason Bonham on drums, Derek Sherinian on keyboards – they just announced their fifth album ‘V’.

‘Stay Free’ is a little bit of a departure from their past music. A slight move away from the powerful and monolithic sound of past albums, this single has a funky and soulful sound. Not for nothing is Glenn Hughes known as ‘The Voice of Rock’, here he couples his wailing with some low down vocals as well and well matches with Bonamassa’s riffs. Sherinian lays down some Stevie Wonder style electric piano and Bonham is the rock that holds it all together.

As a taster for the new album it sounds great, but it stands alone as one of the best rock statements I’ve heard in a while.
