Deniece Pearson embraces Christmas on cosy single ‘Santa Claus is Coming’.

The UK chart may have lost some of its notoriety from years gone by, but the year’s Christmas top spot is still a coveted prize for today’s musicians. The likes of Ed Sheeran, Slade, and yes, even Mr Blobby have attained the seasonal accolade.

Now Deniece Pearson, formerly of the pop band Five Star, seeks to add her name to that eclectic list.

Pearson is no stranger to leading the way, having enjoyed a number one album with Silk and Steel as part of her former band. The group also found its way to number two on the singles chart courtesy of their song Rain or Shine.

The 80s star looks to recapture that glory by embracing most of the trimmings of a traditional Christmas song. With the track in full flow, Pearson sings of Jesus Christ:

“He gave his life for me, although we cannot see;
He’s here with you and me, so appointed Santa to keep giving you gifts.”

Rather than settling for one Christmas theme, the song opts for a scattergun approach. It’s not only about the magical arrival of Jolly Old Saint Nick, but also attempts to encapsulate the importance of Jesus Christ in Christmas. Throw in some references to gifts and, of course, snow — and you have the festive bases covered.

Lyrically, things are a bit stretched at one or two points. At the ropiest moment, Pearson offers:

“’Cos Santa Claus and his sleigh gonna bring you rings and tings.”

This is a brief low point in what is otherwise a warm-hearted, fun single, complete with a sprinkling of cheery cheese.

The Brit Award winner’s enthusiastic rendition successfully captures the childlike excitement of Christmas Eve.

In keeping with the snug spirit, the track has an energetic pop-reggae feel to it. To ensure you know it’s a Christmas tune, bells chime out their Christmas joy and singers harmonise about Santa’s tasty treats.

Overall, ‘Santa Claus is Coming’ is a fun, light, and fluffy three minutes — fit to grace anyone’s ears during the inevitable festive family fight.
