Omni are an American trio comprising of Frankie Broyles (guitar), Philip Frobos (vocals/bass), and Chris Yonker (drums). Based in Atlanta, they have been in the music making business since 2011 and have three albums firmly under their belt. Notably, they were dubbed “the best post-punk band in America” off the back of their 2019 album “Networker”. Five years later, Omni are back with another fresh and exhilarating record. “Souvenir” is their fourth album (second under Sub Pop) and will be released in February 2024.
“Souvenir” is an incredibly easy and fun listen. Their music has a certain familiarity and this album feels warm and comforting like it's been playing in our cars and bedrooms for decades. There is something really universal and exciting about their sound. I imagine their audience is a mix of generations and taste.
With basslines and guitar riffs that jump right out of my speakers, “Souvenir” opens the album with the catchy single, ‘Exacto’. Whether intentional or not, the record incorporates elements of the new and old. There are hints of alternative indie quirkiness from The Futureheads mixed with Broyles’ post-punk Television guitar style. On ‘Plastic Pyramid’, ‘Verdict’ and ‘F1’ additional vocals are featured from Automatic's Izzy Glaudini, adding a subtle sense of cool nonchalance to Omni’s The Strokes meets The Kooks signature sound.
Coupling high energy with melodic storytelling throughout the album, their music lands into The Sparks Brothers and Talking Heads territory. Omni’s lyrics draw upon eccentricities and the absurdness of life, with a wry humour that courses through all of their songs. ‘INTL Water’ is a perfect example of this. On an album rammed with A-tracks, 'Double Negative' is a particular highlight and ‘Granite Kiss’ is sublimely chaotic harnessing a frenetic energy that reminds me of Franz Ferdinand. They end things with ‘‘Compliment”, which takes on a psychedelic / late The Beatles note.
Overall, "Souvenir" is a deliciously infectious and charismatic album that I can't recommend highly enough.
