Based in Ontario, Sunshine Makers are an innovative R&B/neo-soul/hip-hop band. Their latest single, ‘Lovers to the Moon’ features Phoenix Pagliacci and Kamilah Apong from Toronto musical acts TRP.P and TUSH. It is the first single from their upcoming “B SIDE” EP; the follow-up to their “A SIDE” EP, which was released in the beginning of this year. ‘Lovers to the Moon’ is also the first release on, their own imprint, Lovetown Records.

When I first played this track, for a split-second, I thought I was listening to the bass intro to ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ by Queen. No sooner did I think that than the bassline morphed into something a little more like ‘Get Lucky’ by Daft Punk and there it remained. ‘Lovers to the Moon’ is rooted in new-school disco vibes, spliced with some r&b/hip-hop flavours. It sounds like it has always existed. It is very classic and there is refined quality to it. It has been described as Strokes meet Daft Punk! Sounds fun right?

Fundamentally, I simply cannot get over how irresistibly catchy this is. It left me thinking that Mark Ronson could easily have been all over this. Anything that can manage to recreate the spirit of ‘Uptown Funk’ is impressive and no easy feat. It is hard to be able to craft something that sounds so simple and yet is deeply rooted in R&B, funk, jazz, and neo soul. Luckily for us, ‘Lovers to the Moon’ succeeds in emerging with something as commercially viable as ‘Get Lucky’ or ‘Uptown Funk’.
