The second instalment from the current masters of the combined electronica/drums scene comes in the form of another improvisation marathon to have your mind spinning and head bobbing without quite realising why, who, or what's going on.
I'll be the first to admit that this brand of ‘free jazz' – if I must pigeon hole it – is far from everyone's cup of tea, but then you could say the same for House parties on a Sunday morning, but that doesn't mean that if you are into it you won't have a great time.
As you may or may not be aware, Kieran Hebden is an electronica whiz, bending and shaping tones and beeps and electric ramblings. Steve Reid is quite simply a superb drummer. Some may disagree and I have heard opinions to the contrary, but I find it hard to even catch a glimpse of the alternative point of view. Reid has played with James Brown, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and the late great John Coltrane. It is a pedigreed CV and to my mind he doesn't fail to disappoint...not for a minute.
The LP is unedited, undubbed, uncombed, unplumbed and un- everything else, and I think this is where it's best. Two musicians as Reid said, trying to go back to the days where ‘People used to dance to jazz. It became too cerebral and we're continuing the old tradition'. I've never heard anything like it, but like it I do and I suggest you give it a go. At worst you'll get to hear a unique blend of music, at best a fantastic meld of new tunes played in an extraordinary way.
