There's no doubting Terri Walkers voice and on I Am she delivers a soul vocal masterclass. Merging soul, groove and a dash of British funk, the mostly light and airy musical arrangements play second fiddle to her sweet and powerful vocal range. If you're a fan of coffee table soul this will be your cup of tea. The slick production at times, however, creeps near the wrong side of bland, but as a showcase for a British voice to be proud of, I Am hits all the right notes. Recent single, Alright With Me, is the stand out track for its uplifting floaty groove and general cheeriness The title track is driven by a taught, crisp funky snare, while Side By Side has a cheeky party vibe. Walker's voice, however, remains the shining light, and carries through some of the less memorable musical moments (I've forgotten which ones!). The album was recorded in London and mixed by Gerry “The Gov” Brown in LA, who has worked with such names as Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind and Fire. Walker's third album is the first for Dekkor Records who allowed her to make the album she wanted. She happily obliged by co-writing and co-producing all ten tracks. With that in mind, the overall package deserves praise. Her working credits to date include Young Disciples, Brand New Heavies, Jools Holland, Lisa Stansfield and Mos Def. Now, standing fully on her own two feet, the 26 year old Sussex girl has booked her place for a long soul career.
