Ron Sexsmith releases a new album,'Time Being' on V2 Music May 15th.I remember seeing him play an acoustic set as support to Elvis Costello a long time ago and along with the intriguing name, this Canadian could really dig deep in the emotional heartstrings that hold us together.
Born in 1964 it wasn't till 1995 that he got a proper debut release. I came in around the ‘Whereabouts' album of 99 with one of the most superlative tracks of that year ‘Right About Now'.
Tracking releases since then, this being his 9th album including collaborations, we have a typical RS album full of strong melodic songs dealing with the philosophy of love in all its gore and glory.
There too are its limitations as there is no real progression musically or lyrically, even commercially if you will, something that seems to have avoided him generally.
Sounding very much like a latter day Paul McCartney vocally and in some of the more folky arrangements it appeals but doesn't really seep into my veins as a love drug/poison should do.
‘Jazz At The Bookstore' stands out for its clever lyric and superb melody and the one take solo of ‘And Now That Day Is Done' demonstrates how naked and raw he can be ‘live'.
A good album from a top singer-songwriter
