Reality television graduate Chase Rice may not have quite set the music world alight with his first three studio album releases, but the hype surrounding his fourth studio album, Lambs & Lions has been rapidly building thanks to the success of lead single Three Chords & The Truth. Having seemingly abandoned his bro country leanings for the single, fans new and old are excited for what may mark a new chapter in the successful songwriter's career as he promises to release his most personal and accomplished album to date.

Having openly criticized his former record label for holding back his creative vision to accomplish what they felt would be more commercially appealing, in ways it could be argued that this is Rice's real debut album. Having been allowed the freedom to craft an album that reflects his real intentions, this is new start for the well established artist.

While his previous releases have veered more towards the universal party anthems, Lambs & Lions sees Rice in a far more reflective mood. This is an intimate and personal release that explores relationships, tribulations and faith. Yes, Jack Daniel's Showed Up proves that the party boy has not got lost completely, but the other 10 tracks show a side to Rice that his listeners will be unfamiliar with.

Lambs & Lions is all the more memorable for the change of direction. Yes, we all like a good party and those anthems are essential to Rice's continued success, but balancing the two facets of his career is key to his growth.

Opening song Lions shows just how different the real Rice is. With The Lord's Prayer hauntingly chanted and a metal country sound explored, Rice's diverse influences are immediately showcased and set him apart from his counterparts. Nashville may now be known for its genre breaking sound, but Rice redefines it completely on his own terms. Country rock may be common place, but this heavy and raw sound is one that is completely of his own making.

While the album has a really powerful punch behind it, it is actually in the more tender moments that Rice shines the brightest. Eyes On You and Saved Me are two of the albums most understated and under-produced moments but they will be the ones that have your heart melting. However it is the totally sensational tribute to his late father, Amen, that offers not only the greatest personal insight but the album's truly showstopping moment.

Lambs & Lions showcases an artist who has been allowed to final breathe life into his own sound. While there are a few hiccups along the way, overall it is a striking and compelling listen.
