The previous Len Price 3 Album – ‘Nobody Knows’ – came out in 2014 and over the last three years it has been one of my most listened to albums; brilliantly crafted pop in the Who/Small Faces/Kinks vein, 2 to three minute vignettes of life, melodies and some furious playing all combining to make something that is very special.
This album is equally a collection of perfect gumdrops of pop. Stories told, scenes set and all set to the sparse and angular riffery of the band.
These tales of ordinary life all illustrate things we have all experienced in one way or another such as the tale of ‘Lisa Baker’ – pr to be more exact a sharply etched image of lust for her by someone below even her social circle, Then there is ‘Telegraph Hill’, a Beatle-esque and wistful plea from the heart describing a lovers lane. Like I said, tales or ordinary life but told from the heart and filled with brilliant insights.
One of the most effective tracks is ‘Saturday Morning Film Show’ – furious rhythm, compact guitar lines and a nasal vocal that just puts you back into the Saturday film clubs at the Odeon.
‘Nothing I Want’ is furious, powerful and political as hell.
Musically, the album is super. Predominantly guitar based but covering the gamut from early pop, through punk and mod and even into psych (‘Man In The Woods’) and with furious drumming and heavy bass lines but the vocal of Glenn Page with its slightly nasal intonation carries keening emotion and angry power effortlessly.
The album is a stunner. Simple as that. The Len Price 3 are the modern mod marvels.
