Will Hoge has had quite the ride since his 2001 major label debut Carousel. The 45 year old Americana singer has experienced the highest highs and accolades awarded a recording artist, while simultaneously battling against a creative industry that all too often cripples creatives. Having been last heard on record dabbling with a rather predictable, but very enjoyable contemporary country sound for 2015's Small Town Dreams, fans of definitive voice were left craving something with a little more depth from the talented man. Thankfully he has just released Anchors, an album which exceeds all his previous bodies of work and will not just satisfy the hunger of his audience but see him win over a whole new audience.

While his last release would have found itself filed somewhere between Billy Currington and John Mellencamp, he has returned with a record that boasts cuts that would see Jason Isbell scrapping with both Sam Outlaw and Sturgill Simpson to get their chance to record them. This is trad country with a contemporary twist that has not pomp or ceremony, just a simple heart that is beating boldly.

Although the album leans predominantly towards the melancholic ballad, the rocker within has not been lost in the equation. At it's most compelling are two songs at opposing ends of the spectrum. The absolutely epic closer Young As We Will Ever Be is an anthem for all ages. This is one you will sing out loud and proud at the next Will Hoge concert you attend. Little Bit Of Rust, a duet with Sheryl Crow, is a stunning dissection of a marriage gone stale for a couple determined to make it last. The understated but determined delivery that allows the two fine vocalists to shine, while the playful lyrics will have you grinning from ear to ear.

This is a collection that veers away from the commercial edge of its predecessor and feels stronger for not having to play the industry game. This is an album has cuts that should dominate the Radio 2 playlist, but won't be forgotten two weeks after it is replaced by the next hype act.
