Having written with some of the industry's biggest names, Nina Schofield made a vow in 2015 that she would push her own career to the top of her priorities. After some high profile support tours last year and a couple of low profile singles, Restart is released ahead of her debut solo album Shapes and is a confident slice of power pop. Opening with a vulnerable sounding vocal about a relationship coming to an end, where the metaphorical roller-coaster is becoming too predictable, the song changes gear dramatically within 40 seconds.
What seemed uncertain becomes firm-footed as Schofield's vocal takes full control over a thumping bass and keyboard. As a remixed club number this could have a huge impact with sing-along "oohs" and a simple message. Lyrically we have been here before - and we will again and again - but that's not to distract from a tasty piece of 2016 pop. Now all Schofield has to do is fight her way through the myriad of competitors. Having said that, while Adele dominates the slow lane musically, and new talent like Foxes head for the middle of the road, in the dance-pop arena there's Ellie Goulding and all her glitter and gold but not a lot else (in terms of the UK), so maybe 2016 can be Schofield's year.
