This is another throwback to the golden era of hard rock bands and I have to say that Monster Truck are about the most enjoyable I’ve heard in a while.
A four piece that takes me right back to bands like Mountain and Captain Beyond, they’ve been supporting the likes of Guns ‘N’ Roses, Slash and Alice In Chains and also appeared at Hammerfest and Download here in Blighty.
There have been a few bands recently who have really turned out some great hard rock – Inglorious and Last In Line to name but two – but what makes Monster Truck a little different is the variation in pace and – to coin a word – heaviosity.
‘Black Forest’ is a good example of what the band can do, ranging from the piano opening to a build through the storm into a Sabbath-like core riff and vocals that drip with restrained passion and power. The opener ‘Why Are You Not Rocking’ shows all their mighty pace with Steve Kiely driving them along with a sledgehammer drum sound while ‘Things Get Better’ shows that they can funk it up some as well with a dense groove that had me nodding from the off.
Alice In Chains Mike Inez described them as “… the real deal. Familiar, comfortable. Like an old pair of gig shoes or sweaty pig-sex with an ex-girlfriend.” And I can see where he is coming from.
They don’t do anything you haven’t heard before but they do it all with punch and pizzazz and they had me bouncing around the room more than once.
They have just announced that they are playing the 100 Club in London on April 9th – definitely a must do.
