The Black Tambourines have been Falmouth's worst kept secret for a few years now. They always seem to fill whatever sized venue they play to the brim. They are currently spearheading the burgeoning music scene in the town which seems to effortlessly sprout one quality band after another.
It does the band an injustice to simply describe them as surf rock, for, although their sound is inescapably surf and sunkissed at times, as they demonstrate on Freedom, their influences are wide and varied. 60s Garage is thrown together with a touch of hardcore, a dab of lo-fi, a sprinkling of psych and a chunk of punk in a smorgasbord of sound to batter your eardrums with.
You won't hear a better 2 minute belter this year than album opener I Wanna Stay Away. The guitar hook immediately infects your mind like a virus and the song is over before you know it in a rush of pure energy. Your finger will have pressed repeat before your mind catches up with it.
Don't take my word for it. Check out the video, click on the play button at the top of the page.
Cool laid back melodies are all over She Don't Mind and Look Down, whilst Sister and Lost are the types of tunes that should be best appreciated from the centre of a moshpit. The latter conjuring up memories of early Dinosaur Jr.
It's clear to see why the Record Store Day limited release of No Action sold out without a trace, it's hard not to think of The Dead Kennedys during this full on aural assault.
I always know a great album when my favourite track swaps and changes on a regular basis. At this moment in time the song getting played over and over is Cool Out. As the title suggests it's one of the slower numbers on this record, with a chorus and hook The Jesus and Mary Chain would be proud of, this song encapsulates the songwriting talents of this hugely talented group of guys.
The album closes with a track that sums up the feeling you should be experiencing by the end of a Black Tambourines gig, Ride Hard Crash Hard, and in a trail of feedback the album is over.
Catch the Black Tambourines play with fellow Easy Action label mates The Red Cords and Lost Dawn this coming Friday 30th October. It's not often you get to see 3 bands of this calibre on the same stage. So if you are in Cornwall this weekend, head down to the Princess Pavilion for a night to remember.
