It seems that Gumtree isn't just for bargain hunters, people clearing out their junk or for those seeking a dodgy massage. Not if Kolo are anything to go by anyway. When Jon Burnell, the band's frontman, arrived in the capital from Devon in 2011 he put out an ad on the website/app as he sought to find some like minded musicians. So Kolo were formed, with Burnell joined by Spanish born Dani Mourinho on bass and Croydon's Steve Fuller on drums.
The band signed with LHM in 2014 and have been working on this album over the last 18 months, having spent time in the United States supporting pop rockers 3 Doors Down. That band's guitarist Chris Henderson has overseen the resulting Do You Want To Rule The World? and it has more than a hint of that American edged rock, with big choruses and catchy hooks.
Mr Bigshot is a case in point with its shiny guitar bursts and poppy rhythm. It seemingly takes a pop at being materialistic, while sounding like a distant cousin of Good Charlotte. The ten tracks largely stick to that formula, but King of the Street People is more interesting and edgier and Be Someone has a heavier feel. There is plenty of energy here and you would give them 10 out of 10 for trying. The problem might be that 2015 is not the best time for guitar bands. To stand a chance, they might need to find a more British sound, rather than looking across the Atlantic for inspiration.
