Kubb release their debut album ‘Mother' on Mercury to critical acclaim. Having already released the majestic pop anthem ‘Remain' and the current infectious grower ‘Wicked Soul' Kubb throw open the doors and welcome you to their heart. Harry Collier's vocal delivery is always sweetly emotional and on occasion almost too much so, although the moody dark songs counter this well. ‘If I Can't Have You' highlights a worldly deep intelligent songwriter as does ‘Somewhere Else'. Never overly produced “Mother' allows the complex simplicity of the songs to shine through. Guitars bass and drums are asked to perform only when necessary and provide purely relevant content to what is a well thought out debut. ‘Without You' has some of the magical music dust that Embrace sprinkled over ‘Ashes' whilst also bringing to mind U2's classic ‘With Or Without You'. You do get the sense that Collier is being restrained at times and maybe a few more chances and raw energy should have been allowed to abound but all summed up ‘Mother' is an album that should find itself in many Christmas stockings.
