Brian Eno opened the proceedings for the first day of Radio Festival 2015 last night, by delivering the annual BBC Music John Peel Lecture on the subject of “the ecology of culture”, where he called for a rethink of how we talk about culture.

Two days of Radio Festival 2015 remain – Radio Festival Showcase kicks off tomorrow and will see a host of huge names deliver exclusive keynote speeches and talks. Radio Festival TechCon is taking place today.

At last night’s BBC Music John Peel Lecture Brian Eno talked about how arts and culture were worth pursuing not just for economical reasons, but should play a central role in people’s lives in a world of rapid change. He told how art and culture offers “a safe place of you to have quite extreme and rather dangerous feelings.” Brian Eno added: “I think we need to rethink how we talk about culture, rethink what we think it does for us, and what it actually is. We have a complete confusion about that. It’s very interesting.”

Two days remain of Radio Festival, with the main Radio Festival Showcase taking place tomorrow. Some of this years highlights will include ex Radio 1 DJ, Zane Lowe, reuniting with his former boss Ben Cooper for an exclusive ‘In Conversation’, an ‘In Conversation with Paul Gambaccini: My Year Under the Yewtree’, Richard Curtis live from New York on ‘Radio Everyone’, hosted by Radio 1Xtra’s Yasmin Evans, an ‘In Conversation’ with Chris Evans, Christian O’Connell on ‘Freedom of Speech’, LBC presenter Nick Ferrari talking about the future of the BBC and Janet Street Porter will speak about the ‘Media Landscape’. The reveal of this year’s list of ReelWorld 30 under 30, and a performance from Jack Savoretti, will bring Radio Festival Showcase to a close.

Radio Festival Showcase is the biggest forum for discussion and debate in the radio industry. The event is packed with exclusive, compelling sessions from an eclectic mix of some of the greatest names in radio and audio, showcasing the diversity of opportunities in the business and giving a voice to the industry in its entirety.
