The Lister School becomes the second school to implement the Andrew Lloyd Webber Programme.
210 youngsters in Year 7 are the first students @ Lister Community School to be part of the MiSST – Andrew Lloyd Webber Programme.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber Programme provides each student with a free musical instrument and the opportunity to be exposed to an enriched musical experience including free tuition, theory and improvisation along with the opportunity to regularly perform. These young people will join more than 400 students who are at Highbury Grove School in Islington and are also part of the Programme.
The Music in Secondary Schools Trust is co-funded by the Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust and the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. Both charities have contributed £1 million to roll the Programme out from the originating school, Highbury Grove, to 3 more. Lister has been selected to be the first partner school.
Through high quality music lessons and a broader musical experience for all, the Programme will ensure that music has a strong place within the curriculum and become a key element of each school’s ethos. As a result of participating, students will develop essential life skills of self-discipline, teamwork and resilience. They will also come to understand the importance of working with others where relationships are interdependent.
The CEO of MiSST, Truda White said “This is a really exciting moment for Lister school and the charity. The impact already demonstrated at Highbury Grove where music has played a significant part in transforming the school from being merely effective to outstanding is irrefutable. We expect that over time the same will happen at Lister Community School.”
The Headteacher at Lister, Anthony Wilson, is similarly excited about the potential for music to transform his school. He said "Staff and students are very excited about the opportunity of being involved with MiSST.
Learning a musical instrument is good for every individual student, and the experience of making music brings the whole school community together. This partnership, together with our ongoing involvement with Newham's Every Child a Musician scheme, and the E13 primaries, makes me very confident that in the coming years Lister will be known both for academic success and musical excellence."
