Nine Days in Hamburg: Cardinal Black bring their live instincts to Second Sign of Life

The setting offered plenty of opportunities to complicate things. Hamburg’s Clouds Hill Studios had vintage equipment, residential facilities and room for Cardinal Black to immerse themselves in recording. The band’s response was to keep asking how much each song actually needed.
That decision shapes Second Sign of Life, the Welsh trio’s third studio album, due January 29, 2027 through Thirty Tigers. Recorded during nine days in June 2026 between European tour dates with Alter Bridge, it finds the group taking responsibility for production and engineering for the first time.
The timing mattered. Cardinal Black arrived with the experience of playing together night after night still fresh, and with little room in the schedule for endless revisions. Earlier writing sessions in Hay-on-Wye had proved frustrating. Hamburg offered a different working environment, with the musicians effectively living where they recorded.
Lead single “Saving Grace,” out now, gives the project a clear point of entry. The riff-driven song pairs Chris Buck’s muscular guitar playing with Tom Hollister’s soulful vocals, while its lyric centres on someone who provides support when life becomes unsettled. Hollister had carried an earlier version for roughly ten years before finding an approach that felt coherent.
Touring bassist Sam Andrews, also a recording engineer, contributed to the album sessions. Although Hollister, Buck and drummer Adam Roberts form the core trio, the arrangements drew on Cardinal Black’s expanded live lineup. The aim was to preserve the relationships between the players, allowing space to remain part of the music.
That represents a shift from Midnight at the Valencia, recorded at Zurich’s Powerplay Studios with a more expansive production approach. The 2025 album topped the UK Official Independent Album Breakers Chart and helped launch a sold-out debut North American headline tour. Its successor takes that progress as permission to simplify.
Across ten tracks, Second Sign of Life addresses subjects that suit a closer perspective: love, loss, growing older, vulnerability and life away from home. The recording circumstances give those themes a useful framework, with a touring band briefly stopping in one place to make an album together. Release information is available at Cardinal Black’s website, with further updates through their Instagram.
