The Association for Independent Music (AIM) hosted the 16th annual Independent Music Awards at London’s Roundhouse, celebrating the defining artists, labels, and entrepreneurs across the UK’s independent sector.
Pauline Black, pioneering frontwoman of The Selecter, received the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award in recognition of a career spanning more than four decades. Accepting the honor, Black highlighted her origins with 2 Tone Records in 1979 and reiterated her commitment to spreading anti-racist and anti-sexist messages through independent platforms. Black later performed live on stage alongside The Selecter during the ceremony.
Iconic DJ duo Fabio & Grooverider were presented with the Innovator Award for their foundational role in shaping Jungle and Drum ’n’ Bass culture. Major artist honors included Jorja Smith taking home Best Independent Track for 'The Way I Love You', marking her second AIM award win. Swedish pop artist Robyn won Best Independent Album for Sexistential, while Daptone Records soul singer Jalen Ngonda was named Independent Breakthrough following a live performance during the event.
Additional music categories saw Jim Legxacy win Best Independent Mixtape/EP for black british music (2025), while rising rap-rock artist Native James secured the One to Watch title. The PPL Award for Most Played New Independent Artist went to bees & honey, and Billy Lockett picked up Best Live Performer via a public vote.
Industry achievements were also highlighted throughout the evening. Because Music was named Best Independent Label following its 20th anniversary, while untitled (recs) claimed Best Boutique Label. Ninja Tune and Fcukers jointly took home Best Release Campaign for the album Ö, and Mark Lippmann of Scruff of the Neck was named Music Entrepreneur of the Year. Liverpool’s Jacaranda Records was recognized as Best Independent Record Store.
