Mercury Prize-nominated indie group Sports Team have officially returned with their brand-new single 'Billy', out today via Distiller Records and Bright Antenna alongside an accompanying music video.
Marking their first release since their third studio album Boys These Days dropped in May 2025, 'Billy' combines alternative soul elements with a jagged rock edge. Recorded live at London's RAK Studios over the summer with Seth Evans and Adele Phillips, the track delivers one of the band's most raucous offerings to date.
Commenting on the inspiration behind the single, songwriter and rhythm guitarist Rob Knaggs explained: "It’s a love letter to getting desperately, insanely drunk at a carpeted pub on a Tuesday night. We recorded it live at RAK studios over the first weeks of summer with Seth Evans and Adele Phillips. It felt like a return to how we made the first album. Fast, and loose and loud."
The single is available across all major streaming platforms today, alongside a limited physical run released on flexi disc.
Comprising vocalist Alex Rice, guitarist Rob Knaggs, lead guitarist Henry Young, bassist Oli Dewdney, drummer Al Greenwood, and keyboardist Ben Mack, Sports Team initially rose to prominence with their Mercury Prize-nominated debut album Deep Down Happy, which peaked at Number 2 on the UK Albums Chart. Their follow-up release Gulp! secured a second consecutive Top 3 album position, while Boys These Days reached Number 1 on the Official Record Store Chart.
Following a recent pop-up show at The George Tavern, the band will headline the intimate DIY Alive tour this autumn, culminating at the DIY Alive Festival at EartH in London. The headline run visits Southampton, Oxford, Bristol, Liverpool, Blackpool, Edinburgh, Newcastle, and Nottingham throughout September and October.
