Influential British folk-rock pioneer Richard Thompson has announced the upcoming release of his 20th studio album, Hippies, Thugs and Heroes, set to arrive on 16 October 2026 via New West Records. In preview of the release, the acclaimed songwriter and virtuosic guitarist has shared the album's lead single, “Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking.”
The gritty, 12-track record follows his 2024 album Ship to Shore, which drew wide critical praise for its expert construction and engaging trad-rock sound. For this latest project, Thompson co-produced the album alongside James Frazee, recording live with minimal takes at Hobosound Studio in Weehawken, New Jersey.
Hippies, Thugs and Heroes presents a diverse cast of characters drawn from the depths of Thompson's mind, ranging from false gurus to the album's titular hippies and thugs. He explains that the disparate songs ultimately formed a coherent and daring project. "You look over the body of songs you’ve written and ask yourself, Which ones are kindred spirits?" Thompson noted.
To prepare for the recording sessions, Thompson spent considerable time creating detailed home demos. By writing and recording full-band concepts independently, including playing his own drum kit, he brought a stronger personal identity to the studio. He was joined by his backing band, which includes bassist Taras Prodaniuk, drummer Michael Jerome, guitarist and fiddler David Mansfield, and backing vocalist Zara Phillips.
The lead single, “Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking,” provides an immediate glimpse into the album's atmosphere. Described as a hardscrabble tale of characters hustling in London, the track highlights Thompson’s signature guitar work, culminating in a raw, psychedelic solo.
With a career spanning over half a century—from his foundational work in Fairport Convention to a highly successful solo run—Thompson remains a defining figure in folk-rock history. Having received lifetime achievement honors from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the Americana Music Association, and the Ivor Novello Awards, this latest release continues his singular musical journey.
Hippies, Thugs and Heroes will be available on CD, digital platforms, and multiple limited-edition vinyl variants through independent retailers and New West Records. Thompson is also scheduled to perform across the UK and US throughout the summer and autumn.
