KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD have announced details of their highly anticipated 28th studio album, Alien Metal, which is set for release later this summer on p(doom) records. In keeping with their recent electronic-focused live performances and following on from their 2023 record The Silver Cord, the ever-evolving Melbourne six-piece have set their sights directly on the dark heart of electronic dance music.
The new record was entirely written and recorded on an extensive modular synthesizer setup that the band took out on the road last year, which they affectionately named "Nathan." The sonic experiment represents a massive detour from their standard guitar arrangements, resulting in an ambitious, seamless musical journey through industrial techno, hardcore, house, and jungle influences, all heavily filtered through the band's signature psychedelic lens.
To mark the announcement, the group shared the album's lead single, Level 5, alongside an accompanying music video. The cinematic clip features a high-profile cameo by Vince Colosimo, one of Australia’s most celebrated actors known internationally for roles in Chopper, Lantana, and The Great Gatsby.
Widely regarded as one of the most exciting live acts on the planet, the band will support the album release this August with a packed touring schedule. The itinerary features the return of their completely sold-out Field Of Vision Festival II in Buena Vista, Colorado, followed by a major three-night headline residency at New York’s Forest Hills Stadium. They will wrap up the August run with two specialized "rave shows" in Brooklyn, including an outdoor performance under the K Bridge Park with electronic musician .VRIL.
The creation of Alien Metal was far from straightforward, with the band abandoning entire recording sessions over several years before finding the project's ultimate identity. The breakthrough finally arrived during a single, late-night improvisation session that stretched for over an hour. That spontaneous electronic jam became the concrete foundation for the entire tracklist, with every single song on the album evolving dynamically from that one original source performance.
