We all love a bit of small-town rumour and the chaos and beauty of the local gossip mill. So, what if there was a country song that captured that exact joy and temptation? Look no further than Irish singer-songwriter Janet Devlin's return, ‘Diane’ - a feisty tale of how quickly rumours can spread, swept along by a whirlwind of whispers.

Sharp, witty, and unapologetically Devlin, her self-aware charm has cemented her reputation as a compelling storyteller, continuing to draw audiences into her theatrical country world. Exploring the messy and taboo subjects of relationships, self-reflection, and now the ripple effect of a community's actions, she delivers one of her most shameless statements yet.

The song itself feels like the unraveling of one murmur too many – slightly disjointed, with reality beginning to blur – while proudly infused with rugged electric guitar riffs, gritty, growling vocals, and crashing drums that add a noticeable rock 'n' roll edge to Devlin's trademark country sound, reaffirming her versatility within the genre. Born from the line, 'her real name's Anne, but I say go die Anne,' the track grew into a full-blown narrative during a writing session with longtime collaborator Ian Barter, becoming a relatable depiction of Devlin's own experience growing up in a rural, close-knit community.

Janet shared: ‘The approach that I landed with lyrically was the one I could relate to the most. The small town gossip mill and how quickly rumours/news will spread. Growing up in a super small village, I’ve seen it happen in real time - it’s pretty impressive how fast news can travel! I thought it’d be funny to start the track with what most people do before they spill the tea. The “I swear I’m not a bad person” preamble. Where I’m from, it always starts with “God forgive me but…”. It felt much more apt on this one, as it’s about a woman, to assure the listener that I myself am not anti-woman. Explain to everyone that I am a feminist…to an extent, and that doesn’t extend to her!’

Recorded at the iconic Nashville musical haven, Blackbird Studios, the track's glorious spontaneity and almost theatrical arrangement blossomed throughout the recording process. It serves as a love letter to the country classics that came before it, while injecting a modern twist and heaps of restless energy that make you want to head down your own path of sleuthing and investigation. We've all pretended we don't want to gossip, but Devlin once again embraces her raw honesty, proving that, more often than not, we really do.

With ‘Diane,’ Devlin once again establishes that the strongest country songs are often rooted in life's smallest moments. Equal parts tongue-in-cheek and irresistibly candid, she continues to cement her distinctive blend of razor-sharp storytelling and emotional authenticity, which only becomes more captivating with each release.

That momentum carries on to the road this summer, with Devlin bringing her electrifying live show to audiences across Ireland and the UK. She’s set to make a stop at Soho's Green Room in London on 21st July before festival appearances at Belladrum on 30th July and Country Calling on 16th August.

If the daring, bold, and fun nature of Diane tells us anything, it's that Janet Devlin knows exactly how to turn everyday stories into some truly unforgettable songs.
