Critically acclaimed alternative rock group EELS have officially announced the upcoming release of their 16th studio album, COOKIE HAPPENED. Scheduled to arrive on October 16, 2026, via E Works and Play It Again Sam, the highly anticipated 12-track record is currently available for global pre-order.
To celebrate the announcement, the band has shared the album's lead single, "Cap In Hand," across digital platforms alongside an official visualizer. The beautifully bruised acoustic track offers a bittersweet look at accountability, written from the perspective of an individual confronting past mistakes and attempting to make amends. The rueful yet quietly triumphant tone introduces the thematic core of the upcoming album, which finds enigmatic frontman E (Mark Oliver Everett) turning his creative gaze toward life's small victories and inevitable disappointments.
Reflecting on the unique inspiration behind the album's title, E shared a philosophical perspective on legacy and impermanence. "All of this will be forgotten. Every joy, accomplishment and hardship will one day become so irrelevant it will be as if none of it occurred," the frontman explained. "But as the great philosopher of our times, Cookie Monster once said: 'Me no cry because cookie is finished. Me smile because cookie happened.' Isn’t it still a beautiful thing that it happened?"
COOKIE HAPPENED follows the success of the group's 2024 album, EELS TIME!, continuing a remarkable late-career run of material that balances dark humor with hard-won optimism. Regarding the sonic direction of the leading single, E joked about maintaining his signature emotional honesty. "I wanted to sound kind of worn out for this one too, like someone who’s messed up their life but now sees the error of their ways and is trying to make amends with their tail between their legs."
Since emerging with their seminal 1996 debut Beautiful Freak, EELS have sustained one of the most distinctive and consistently praised trajectories in modern alternative music. Beyond his vast musical output, frontman E is also the author of the bestselling memoir Things the Grandchildren Should Know and the central subject of the award-winning documentary Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives.
