Electronic music pioneers Soft Cell have officially announced the release of Danceteria, their sixth and final studio album. Scheduled to arrive on September 25, 2026, via Republic of Music, the comprehensive 12-track project serves as a vibrant love letter to early 1980s New York City and a poignant tribute to late multi-instrumentalist and producer Dave Ball.
Alongside the announcement, the band has debuted the music video for the album's celebratory, disco-pop title track.
The upcoming album represents the final creative partnership between vocalist Marc Almond and Ball, who sadly passed away on October 22, 2025. Ball completed the final musical mixes for the record just two days prior to his untimely death. Almond confirmed that Danceteria will permanently conclude the band's 47-year recording career, stating that continuing the Soft Cell name without his lifelong musical counterpart would be impossible.
The concept of the album tracks a symbolic, hedonistic night out in early 1980s Manhattan, drawing direct inspiration from the legendary three-story Danceteria nightclub. Following the recording sessions for their seminal 1981 debut Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, the duo frequently immersed themselves in the city's underground, queer-friendly club culture alongside contemporary figures like Andy Warhol and a young Madonna. Almond noted that the vibrant, gritty, and dangerous atmosphere of New York heavily shaped their streetwise sonic identity and narrative lyricism.
Produced in collaboration with Grammy-winning mixer Philip Larsen, the record expands the band's iconic synth-pop foundations into cinematic soundscapes. The physical CD edition will feature 14 tracks, including bonus entries "Crackland" and "What Is Your Morality." The album concludes with a righteous mutant-disco cover of Was (Not Was)’s 1981 classic "Out Come The Freaks," featuring guest vocals from soul icon Nona Hendryx. Ahead of the autumn launch, Almond will perform under the Soft Cell banner across North America this summer on the Generations Tour alongside The Human League and Alison Moyet.
