The Jazz Foundation of America successfully presented its highly anticipated annual spring benefit gala, "A Great Night in Harlem," at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. The star-studded cultural evening brought together an array of legendary figures and rising stars from the worlds of jazz, blues, rock, and soul for a night of live collaborations, musical tributes, and community fundraising.
The centerpiece of the evening was the presentation of the 2026 Dr. Billy Taylor Humanitarian Award to ten-time Grammy Award winner Norah Jones, celebrating her career achievements and philanthropic efforts. The gala also put a spotlight on legendary bassist Buster Williams and saxophonist Gary Bartz, who were both named as the 2026 Jazz Legacies Fellowship recipients in recognition of their enduring, lifelong contributions to the jazz genre.
Under the expert guidance of Artistic Director Steve Jordan, the concert program featured a series of uniquely curated sets that explored the evolution of the art form. A major highlight of the night was a dedicated centennial tribute to jazz pioneer Miles Davis, which featured moving performances by Gary Bartz and Patrice Rushen. Buster Williams took the stage with his ensemble Something More, featuring acclaimed drummer Lenny White, while an international tribute to Cal Tjader and Willie Bobo brought together percussionists Juan Diego Villalobos and Sammy Figueroa. The generation-spanning lineup also included a tribute to Ernest Ranglin, featuring 17-year-old guitar prodigy Marel Hidalgo.
The evening featured appearances and performances by a vast collective of respected instrumentalists, including Mino Cinelu, Clifton Anderson, Stefon Harris, and special guest Ann Curry.
All proceeds raised from the ticket sales and charitable donations directly support the Jazz Foundation’s vital social service and employment programs. These initiatives provide housing assistance, pro bono medical care, emergency disaster relief, and dignified performance opportunities to elder or ailing musicians in need across the United States.
