NYC-based music luminary Joan As Police Woman is back with a new release – something worth the 20-year wait for its appearance. With her striking new rendition of “Eternal Flame,” she doesn’t revisit her past so much as reshape it. Breathing new life into songs that have clearly evolved alongside her, this is the latest glimpse into her forthcoming “Real Life Evolution' album, which feels less like a retrospective and more like a living, breathing dialogue between then and now.
The album version of “Eternal Flame” was recorded at Hayyam Studios in Istanbul, adding yet another layer of global perspective to a project rooted in personal history. Premiered alongside an intimate live video, the track captures Joan Wasser at her most reflective and commanding—an artist fully in control of her legacy while continuing to expand it. This is the fourth video in the ‘ The Real Life Anniversary Sessions ', recorded at The Owl Music Parlor in Brooklyn by Adam Sachs and filmed by Ehud Lazin, following ' Flushed Chest', ' The Ride' and ' Anyone '.
Marking 20 years since the release of her debut " Real Life " album, the new record sees Wasser reimagine the album in full, drawing from two decades of touring, collaboration, and reinvention. Set for release on June 12 via Reveal Records" (available on CD, limited-edition red marble vinyl, and digital formats), the album is both a celebration and a transformation. It’s a rare anniversary project that doesn’t rely on nostalgia, instead pushing the material into new emotional and sonic territory.
The new “Eternal Flame” arrangement exemplifies that approach. Built from a rhythmic idea first sparked nearly a decade ago by drummer Parker Kindred, the track has gradually taken shape through years of live performance. Guitarist Will Graefe’s delicate acoustic work and Jeremy Gustin’s intuitive percussion bring a newfound intimacy to the song, allowing Wasser’s voice to sit front and center. The accompanying video captures this chemistry in real time—unvarnished, immediate, and quietly electrifying.
As Wasser puts it, the song began as a gospel-tinged idea about the pressure of being someone’s “everything,” but over time it sharpened into something more cutting: a reminder not to demand the impossible -- especially from yourself. That tension hums beneath the surface of the new version, giving it a sense of hard-won clarity.
On "Real Life Evolution," Wasser is joined by an extraordinary cast of collaborators, including Iggy Pop and Krystle Warren, alongside Graefe, Gustin, Tony Scherr, Parker Kindred, Danny Blume, Oren Bloedow, and Thomas Bartlett. Each musician brings a distinct voice, but the cohesion speaks to Wasser’s singular vision as both bandleader and producer. Produced by Joan Wasser, the album is mixed by Patrick Dillett at Reservoir Studios and mastered by Chris Gehringer at Sterling Sound.
Of course, collaboration has always been central to Joan As Police Woman’s identity. Since adopting the moniker in 2004, well past her earlier years with The Dambuilders, Wasser has become one of the most in-demand musicians in contemporary music, working with an astonishing range of artists—from Tony Allen and Lou Reed to Anohni, Rufus Wainwright, Beck, and Damon Albarn. Whether for her own compositions, when contributing to the Gorillaz universe or performing as part of Iggy Pop’s touring band, she has built a reputation as a musician’s musician: adaptable, inventive, and deeply respected across genres.
Yet for all those connections, "Real Life Evolution" ultimately reaffirms Joan As Police Woman as a singular force. Dubbed “the coolest woman in pop” by The Times and “one of the 21st century’s best musicians” by The Economist, Wasser continues to surprise and delight audiences all over the world. With twelve albums and multiple collaborations to date, and now a reimagined debut that feels as vital as anything she’s released, she stands not just as a legacy act—but as an artist still very much in motion.
The “Eternal Flame” single is available digitally everywhere, but the “Real Life Evolution” album is already available for pre-order, in all formats available, via Bandcamp.
Later this year, Joan visits the UK and Europe on her Real Life 20th Anniversary Tour, performing the 'Real Life' album as a trio, along with key singles from across her catalogue, fan favorites, deep cuts, reworked covers and a few surprises. Joan next performs a handful of shows at New York City at Joe's Pub. All tickets can be ordered at www.joanaspolicewoman.com/tour
